KERALA
Kerala a state, not a city, is famed for its coconut groves, rice paddy fields, golden beaches, serene backwater canal network, quaint colonial port towns, fabulous seafood, tea plantations and rainforests. You could spend weeks here and is a great destination for relaxing on the beach, cruising the backwaters, exploring the high country tea plantations or learning about the colourful history of the region. The Greeks and Romans travelled to Kerala from 3,000 BCE to source their spices and since that time it has been at the crossroads of cultures. Hinduism, Christianity and Islam all play key roles here, each introduced by traders who passed through this place seeking its many riches. As such, Kerala was prized as a trading post by the French, then the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch and British. All of these histories are reflected in Kerala today.
GOA
Goa may be small in size, but there are literally endless choices when it comes to beach options. And although small, it's deceptive in terms of the time it takes to travel around. There is a network of waterways throughout the state which means it can take a lot longer to get between locations than you think. North Goa offers great nightlife, a flourishing and exotic restaurant scene, as well and a range of local and international-style shopping, whereas South Goa has unblemished beaches, scenic drives and tranquillity. Each part of Goa has quite a different personality. Peppered around the region are historical churches, as well as fascinating art galleries and museums. The pace of life is a lot slower in Goa than much of India; it's year-round, humid climate ensures that!
